Alpine Cattle Grazing Supreme Court case

By May 16, 2014 April 10th, 2018 Biodiversity, Cases

Today we launched Supreme Court proceedings seeking orders that cattle not be allowed into the Alpine National Park.

The Supreme Court proceedings are against the Secretary to the Department of Environment and Primary Industries.

We are seeking orders that cattle not be allowed into the Alpine National Park, for any purpose, including ‘research trials’.

We are seeking these orders on the basis of our argument that the Secretary does not have the power to allow grazing under any guise, under the National Parks Act. We will be arguing that the grazing trial is contrary to the objects of the Act, which primarily relate to environment protection and species preservation.

This case is a test case. It will test whether Victoria’s laws protect its precious National Parks. Our client in the case is the Victorian National Parks Association Inc. Their mission is to protect the state’s national parks and they have been working to do this for decades. We’re proud to be using our legal expertise to help them fight to ensure Victoria’s National Parks get the legal protection they deserve.
